0:00 What's up, everyone? I have this news piece from the 90s about orthorexia and veganism. It will be interesting to see how they reported on it back then.

[video] 0:10 So what happens when your diet becomes your religion and your body is the... Religion, exactly. ...only the purest foods? John Stossel shows you now as you meet people so obsessed with healthy eating, it makes them sick.

[video] 0:26 Everything here is organic.

[video] 0:30 Otherwise I most likely wouldn't consider eating it. I'm making a raw zucchini pasta. So I'm just putting some raw hemp seeds.

0:47 For fuck's sake man.

0:50 This is what happens when you become mentally ill because your brain doesn't function anymore. The brain literally shrinks on a vegan diet. This has been proven. And of course, then you don't see what you're supposed to see when you look in the mirror. You see somebody who's healthy. Why? Because you're eating healthy as the government says. Plants, organic, whatever.

[video] 1:11 Sometimes it takes days to prepare meals because I have to sprout things, ferment things.

1:17 His voice is like a girl almost.

[video] 1:20 Only healthy foods has strangely become a very unhealthy obsession. It dominates his days. I'm at the point where I don't even want to shop at the grocery store for produce because I don't know how long it's been sitting out. It's losing its life force. It's dying. The vibration. I'm fighting tooth and nail to find some kind of balance between all these irrational thoughts. Charlotte Anderson, 29-year-old Minnesota mother of three, says she went through the same thing. It really turned into a huge problem and I think that there are a lot of other people out there that have this issue. Food took over her life. She compulsively cataloged everything she ate. I was obsessed with things like macronutrient ratio, anti-nutrient, antioxidant content, numbers, charts. I mean, I have hundreds of sheets, page after page after page. She ignored her children to do this. That is when it first really started to bother me.

2:18 Actually, that's a very good point. All of these man-made numbers that we get nowadays, or antioxidants and nonsense, which are actually toxins, I have a video on it. You would never hear about this in nature, of course, because we are not supposed to hear about it. We are supposed to listen to our bodies and eat what we want to. Listen to our instincts, just like animals. Of course we know what we should eat.

[video] 2:49 Orthorexia is a nutritional god that you must bow down to or you're a sinner. The term was coined by the author of the book Health Food Junkies, Dr. Steven Bratman. And you suffered from it. I would say I suffered from a psychological obsession with food. Bratman says the problem starts with the delusion that every aspect of our health, what diseases we get, even our emotions, can be controlled by the quality of our food. If you eat right, you can achieve perfect safety. People want to feel they can make choices that will keep them healthy. They want it desperately, and that pushes people.

3:31 That's pretty much right, except that it's not about the quality of the food necessarily. Of course, if you only eat plants, which don't have over 50 nutrients, then you will get sick. Most disease is caused by an unnatural diet. In the West, most people eat 70-80% plants. It's a plant-based diet.

[video] 3:49 ...into these more extreme kinds of healthy diets. Macaroni and cheese. This is the downfall of America. And even this innocent apple may be toxic. If it's not organic, it's probably what goes into the soil is going to go into the food, and then it's going to go into you. You should stay away from fruits, from sugars. No meat, no dairy, no eggs, no fish.

4:13 No papapa. you consume.

[video] 4:16 You consume dead food and death accelerates its presence. Eventually it takes over. Victoris Kalvinskas, a keynote speaker at the New Life Expo, is a leading advocate of something called raw foodism. Viva Raw Revolution! Raw foodists believe cooking vegetables, even a little, destroys their nutritional value. And eating meat is worse, Kalvinska says, because you eat the animal's fear.

4:47 This is the guy from Epitome 1, by the way, if you don't remember. He got dementia and...

[video] 4:53 He's pretty much almost dead at this point. I consume the animal's fear? That's ridiculous. But where do you get this idea that the fear from the animal... I get it from personal experience. Anecdotal evidence in it Wow just look at this reporting

5:37 from back then. Nowadays in many places such as Germany the meat consumption has gone down a lot and of course this is why heart disease and everything has increased.

[video] 5:45 It's causing all these diseases that are killing people. That's right. But the fact that we're living longer contradicts that. It doesn't contradict that. It only says that you're living longer under medical intervention. These are not natural whole people. Is Johnny more of a whole person? What will happen to Charlotte and Johnny? I'm fighting tooth and nail to find some kind of balance. I don't want to die. Lots of people have adopted radical diets. Flaxseed crackers, dehydrated meatballs made out of nuts, sour cream made from probably cashews.

6:22 Typical vegan meals nowadays.

[video] 6:23 Periodically you talk about how their diet of raw food only has improved their lives. I feel a lot more well-rounded and happier in general. And I feel like actually my digestion has gotten a lot better also. The life force of food is so much more powerful. Like it keeps you going. You just realize that this really is it.

6:42 Yeah. And then you quit one year later.

[video] 6:46 Eating this way is time consuming. It's something that's just constantly on my mind. Like this morning I literally spent almost three hours preparing my food for the day. Everybody should chew wheatgrass with blue-green algae.

7:03 Everybody should chew wheatgrass with blue-green algae. And then look at what happened to you. What a nutcase.

[video] 7:12 Boris Kulvinskas says they've made a good decision. The benefits of the diet outweigh its rigors. More and more starlets, Hollywood material people, are basically going raw. We're told that includes Demi Moore, Woody Harrelson, You would never be allowed to say that nowadays.

[video] 7:45 Yeah. Uh-huh.

[video] 8:11 You're only eight years older than I and you look much older. I'm not gonna argue that issue. Of course some people might say that... Oh boy. That must hurt. Kate Finn harmed herself. Kate, a former gymnast from Rhode Island, developed orthorexia after she moved to California and began experimenting with diets like raw foodism. she was so absorbed with cleansing her body of toxins that was her lifelong goal beautiful vibrant kade had really become someone that looked much older people would stare looks like a typical vegan to me she wanted to gain weight while eating only foods she considered pure weight last night solid 75. her diary documents her lonely desperate descent What do I do to gain weight? I'm afraid, confused.

[video] 9:07 When you're living within the philosophy of a health food diet, when something's wrong, you treat it by making sure to eat even healthier foods.

[video] 9:17 Finally, Kate agreed to let her family take her to a hospital. And our niece went to pick her up in June, early June, and found her. found her dead at age 37. Her heart had stopped because of malnutrition. As the family read through her diary, they learned that she'd been listening to several health food gurus. And I think that that was really dangerous. Among them, Victoris Kalvinskas. You were in her diary. She died. Hey, I'm in the diary of so many people who overcome cancer, asthma and diabetes. So this woman took some isolated aspects. I haven't the faintest idea. My compassion reaches out to her that she took the path. Well, at least she got detoxified and cleaned and moved on into another.

10:05 At least she got detoxified to death. Motherfucker, what the fuck are you talking about?

[video] 10:12 Kovinska says orthorexics are emotionally unstable people to begin with. Why should we believe you when you've got your own problem history of eating? You write, I was eating only live food. It left me bloated and fatigued, so I made myself vomit. I was detoxifying a lot of the emotional crap from my early childhood experience, and eventually I managed to survive that experience. It's not clear that Johnny Regini will be able to survive his experience. Last time I weighed myself, I was about 78 pounds. I'm 26 years old, and I was told my bones are equivalent to someone 85 years old. That's pretty depressing. And yet, he stays locked in the grip of his orthorexic eating. Why would I want to stop? Why would I want to eat that stuff and kill myself even faster? That's what my orthorexic mind says. I was tired all the time. You know, you could count all my ribs.

[video] 11:09 It was very unhealthy, which is so, so ironic that I was trying so hard to be healthy and ended up so unhealthy.

11:15 Alright, I wish they would report on veganism like that nowadays, but of course there's an agenda behind it. Back then it wasn't so strong, because it's still going on, even worse, because way more people are involved in it.

11:31 Essentially this all comes down to people not eating raw meat, because when you eat raw meat, from the beginning when you're born, You never think about eating anything else. You always think back to the raw meat because you know that that's what you need to sustain your life, to have perfect health. But because people don't eat raw meat and eat very overcooked meat, it's of course not very appetizing. And then they get eating disorders. Orthorexia, bulimia, veganism. It all begins because you eat an unnatural diet. Mental illness is a physical disease. Thanks for watching.
