Exercise Is the Biggest Lie of the 21st Century @Bryan Johnson

0:00 Hi, I'm going to be reviewing Brian Johnson's latest video about exercise and longevity.
[video] 0:22 In the not so distant future, we discovered something truly terrifying about exercise. Most people who exercise are doing it all wrong and it's shortening their lives.
[video] 0:37 If you listen to the internet, exercise would be impossible. Lift heavy.
1:06 His videos are very well made, but the message is completely wrong.
[video] 1:12 None of these people talk about science. What he means is that they present some kind of
1:35 correlation studies, and that's really all that they do, but that has nothing to do with science. It's really pretty much the opposite of science. You can really say that.
[video] 1:47 But here's the truth. Your body isn't one system. It's many systems working together. If you ignore one, then the others eventually suffer. Which means the real question isn't what's the best type of exercise, it's what combination of exercises keeps you alive the longest.
[video] 2:10 The question is why would you want to adapt your body to lifting metal up and down for no reason? Or why would you want to adapt your body to riding a bike
2:36 outside or even worse, on the spot in a building. What's the purpose of it? Because every time you try to adapt your body to something unnatural, and it is unnatural obviously because you hate it, only what feels right, comfortable, natural is intuitively good for you. And this is pretty much the opposite.
[video] 3:19 Based on what? It's just based on nothing. That's the problem with a lot of people online. And Brian Johnson is no different. Instead of explaining why exercise
3:46 could be good for you if you want to believe that. He right away already assumes that it is good for you without even discussing the topic. It's as if it's a no-brainer, whereas in reality, scientifically, exercise is incredibly unhealthy. It shortens your lifespan. You can prove that very easily. scientifically, but instead he will talk about some beliefs. And all of these people ignore science, knowledge.
[video] 4:17 Exercise can reduce the risk of all-cause mortality by 31%. Damn.
4:23 And it's just based on nothing whatsoever. And if he wants to talk about some epidemiological studies, then I can present lots. I will link them in the description. None of that really matters, but there's also... a meta-analysis that I will link, which shows that exercise reduces your lifespan, obviously, because it's stressful and all stress reduces your lifespan.
[video] 4:53 Preach. But here's the problem. Most people get stuck in a sea of overwhelming misinformation. They hyper-focus on one form of exercise or they do nothing at all. Let me stop you there.
[video] 5:09 come with a price. If you want the body that will carry you forward over the next several decades, you need the right information. Science-backed, data-driven, and simple enough to actually follow.
5:22 It may be data-driven, you simply look at some symbols and interpret them, but it's not science-based because something scientific has to be based on knowledge. That's the origin of the word science. It's what it always used to mean, meaning that it has to be based on your senses. It cannot be based on beliefs. Because once you talk about beliefs, which is all that he will talk about, I'm sure, you're automatically talking about, as I said, pretty much the opposite of science.
[video] 6:04 Lifting weights is for nobody because nobody ever used to do that up until
6:33 The year 2000, really, 2010 actually, it's a very recent trend. It came and eventually it will die when people realize how dumb they are, seeing as they simply go to a building to push and pull metal for no reason, just to stress their bodies and destroy their health. For a week to start. Yeah!
[video] 6:59 It makes you less flexible. Lift heavy only, no pain, no gain.
[video] 7:06 Truth is...
7:08 The truth is... Let me...
7:13 that you have those dark eye circles because you work out. It's as simple as that. You will typically see this with people who exercise. If you don't get enough sleep, you have a stressful job or you drink a lot of coffee, then you will also have them. But There are no people that exercise and look healthy. I've never seen that in my life. Everybody who exercises looks unhealthy and that's because they are all exposed to chronic stress.
[video] 7:45 Health is one of the strongest predictors of longevity. Once you're stronger, everything.
7:49 And everybody who exercises looks way older. If you exercise a few times a week, typically you will look at least 10 years older. I've never seen an exception to this. Nobody who exercises... looks younger than their so-called age, because they age biologically, obviously, which is the only way to age.
[video] 8:10 And how could you possibly do such a huge study? You can call it a study, I suppose. Obviously, this is the opposite of science. Only by doing some kind of questionnaires
8:34 If they even did that, this is based on beliefs, the opposite of science, the opposite of knowledge, facts, just some beliefs which create associations. Yes, but what is it based on? What is the risk based on? This is also a huge problem. Instead of focusing on clinical endpoints, actually observable health benefits or health problems, you focus on some kind of markers, most likely, maybe blood pressure, just... some kind of indicators of what could be possibly going on.
9:24 But real actual so-called scientific studies, and of course, that's an oxymoron because you have to believe in the studies, which automatically doesn't make them scientific, seeing as it's not based on knowledge. But that's all right. Those kind of studies can still be somewhat useful, although in the end,
9:48 you should just do scientific experiments yourself instead of relying on anybody else. But my point is simply that those kinds of studies do actual experiments and they account for all of the variables. And then they actually look at the clinical endpoints. These kinds of so-called studies don't look at any of that.
[video] 10:13 future death compared to the strongest muscle isn't just cosmetic it's metabolic armor it cosmetic which implies that it looks good yet no women are attracted to those kind of bodies these men live in their own delusions stabilizes joints improves insulin sensitivity
10:39 Stabilizes joints? People who work out and exercise complain about joint problems all the time. Do people who don't exercise complain about any of that? Never, unless they eat a vegan diet or something. But typically, if you eat good food, no, never. Because you're not stressing your joints. What happens when you stress your joints? You will injure yourself. You will have pain, inflammation because of the stress.
11:16 And obviously the comment about insulin is impossible to prove. Nothing that he's saying can be proven anyway. And protect your body as you age.
[video] 11:28 Muscle isn't just about looking fit or being strong. It literally determines whether you can live independently in old age. You want to be the oldest person in the gym, not the youngest.
11:39 Yes, and the people in Japan, Okinawa especially, Do they exercise? No, never in their lives. Do they have trouble, even if they live alone, if the spouse died? No. They are fine in their 90s, and even beyond the age of 100, they can do everything on their own. No running, no weightlifting, obviously, they never did anything. Yet they are perfectly fine. People who do bodybuilding, run marathons, in their 40s and 50s, they are in a wheelchair or they die from a heart attack. Wake up, you're brainwashed.
[video] 12:19 Person in the nursing home. A simple guide.
12:22 Aim for at least three... Most of the people in nursing homes exercised. And the ones who didn't exercise live on their own and don't need any help. This is the reality. And people just... Believe the lies. They don't look at what's actually going on.
[video] 12:40 Each strength building sessions per week. Focus on compound movements that train the entire body.
12:48 But you're not training your so-called strength. You're simply adapting your body to lifting metal for no reason. How long will you do that? Eventually, your body won't be able to anymore. Push.
13:07 pull push and pull as i always say and just for no reason just to stress your body just to become older to destroy your joints so that you end up in a wheelchair plot progressively overload the weight you use and or the reps you do we and all that you need to do wait there will be a better clip over week progressive overload progressive overload This one, perfect. He looks pretty old for his age. But that's not my point. All that you need to do is look at science. What I mean by that is that you can simply do scientific experiments yourself. You don't even need to read any studies, watch videos online. You can simply do it yourself or look at somebody exercising. What will you see? A face expression which shows you that they hate it.
14:07 And if you do it yourself, then you will know that you hate it. But of course, these people go into denial. And instead of
14:16 knowing what's going on, actually doing scientific experiments, they rely on some symbols, they interpret information put out by other people, and then they imagine that something that feels bad is good for them, even though scientifically we know that exercise is very unhealthy. And as I said, you can simply do these experiments yourself, seeing as everything that you hate doing, everything that feels bad is automatically unhealthy. There's no exceptions to this. It's a law of nature, a law of this reality. It will never change.
[video] 14:55 There are apps available that will help you track progressive overload. Find one that works for you. There are many ways to structure a routine, but the most important thing is build and maintain functional strength. Because strength today is independence tomorrow.
15:12 There was a child on the back of somebody doing push-ups. It's also important to look at children. Do they exercise? Never. Obviously, naturally. But there are parents nowadays who are so brainwashed that they actually force their children to exercise. And when you look at what's going on in these videos where they do that, then you will see that they all hate it, they cry, they want to run away, and they end up hating the parents because they force them to exercise. And that's because exercise... is incredibly bad for you.
[video] 15:54 One hour a day of strenuous exercise.
15:59 Who the hell is that and how much did he pay her to say that?
[video] 16:04 A lot of stretching, a lot of kicking. To walk, walk, walk. Exercise for life.
16:13 Walk, walk, walk, but walking is not exercise by any definition. That's funny because he just went against his own ideas by letting the woman talk. Because when you say walk, walk, walk, then you're saying don't, don't, don't exercise.
[video] 16:35 Pillar 2, low intensity cardio. Zone 2 cardio is absolutely critical to our health.
16:41 Scam artist. Zone 2 is valuable.
[video] 16:44 Zone 2 training has become incredibly popular. It is phenomenal for your heart health.
16:49 Here are some of the false narratives. It's phenomenal for your heart health, even though you stress your heart. and your heart beats really fast, meaning that you're damaging it. But it's good for you. What is that based on? Scientifically, nothing, because scientifically we know that it damages your heart. It's just based on religious beliefs. And you just believe that like a sheep.
[video] 17:16 Cardio kills your muscle gains. It's the only way to burn fat. The more you do, the better. It needs to be exhausting. Walking doesn't count. The truth is low intensity cardio and specifically zone two is one of the best ways to extend lifespan.
17:32 This is exercise at a pace where you can still hold. He just makes all of these claims, but they are based on nothing. A conversation.
[video] 17:39 You got to start using the talk test while you're doing your zone two runs. Because if you can't hold the conversation while you're running, you're not in zone two. Zone two improves mitochondrial function.
17:49 I love it. Mitochondria. Where is it? Oh, it's right there. It's the... Animation. Oh, but why don't you show us a real video, a photo of mitochondria? It has never been observed? Wait, no, that cannot be, no. Why would Brian talk about it if nobody has ever seen it? Oh, maybe because everything that he talks about in this video is based on nothing? Hmm, interesting. What a great video so far.
[video] 18:24 The tiny power plants inside your cells. It trains your body to produce energy efficiently. Burn fat effectively.
18:34 Yes, that's an idea. Can you prove this idea? This belief? No, because it's not based on anything scientific. That's the problem with this whole video.
[video] 18:46 and maintain metabolic health. A simple guide. Start today, then build tomorrow, and the next day, and so on. Cardiovascular activity done appropriately is good for you. It's good for your health. Do it for your overall health and well-being. I personally aim for 150 minutes of Zone 2 cardio per week. Walking, jogging, cycling, swimming. And one of the easiest habits you can build
19:10 literally nothing that you would ever do in nature except for maybe swimming. And even that most people would never do.
19:21 The delusion is also that people don't understand how dense the forests used to be before humans destroyed and cultivated them, so to speak. Blood sugar control, digestion, and keep... Just to be clear, what I'm saying is that it would be impossible to run through a forest. It would be very hard. You would cut yourself constantly. Nobody would ever do it.
[video] 19:48 Keep your body moving throughout the day. Use your muscles for 10 minutes. Your muscles are going to be using some of the glucose from the meal you just ate. A 10-minute walk around the block can drastically reduce your glucose response. Pillar 3, high intensity cardio. Specifically, zones 4 and 5 is an extremely important part of your cardiovascular health. A pillar for longevity.
20:09 If low intensity cardio... Again, he just makes these claims and people that are gullible just eat it up. ...builds the engine.
[video] 20:18 High intensity expands and tests the limits of that engine. Short bursts of high-intensity exercise dramatically improves VO2 max.
20:27 All right, the music also just blasting disinformation.
[video] 20:34 VO2 max measures how efficiently your body uses oxygen.
20:38 A high VO2 max value is a great indicator that you won't live long because the higher it is, the shorter your lifespan will be. ...during exercise.
[video] 20:52 And it turns out VO2max is one of the strongest predictors of longevity. Improve your VO2max.
20:57 Literally the opposite, and we can see that.
[video] 20:59 Which is correlated with all sorts of important metrics related to healthspan, performance, and lifespan. For each unit that you improve it, that is associated with a 45-day extension in life expectancy.
21:11 Rhonda Patrick, she doesn't even tell us how old she is, probably because she looks way older than her chronological age.
[video] 21:20 Higher VO2 max is consistently associated with lower risk of cardiovascular disease and death.
21:28 Conversely... Associated, yes, maybe you can say that. And if you would do another study, then you could say that... Picking sunflowers is associated with a longer lifespan. You can just build any kind of correlations if you want to. Does that have anything to do with science or studies that follow scientific guidelines? Absolutely nothing, zero.
[video] 21:59 Wait. Again, an association.
22:20 Why doesn't he show some kind of proper randomized control trials? with blind testing, placebos, everything, simply because they would show you how incredibly bad exercise is for you.
[video] 22:39 And higher risk of all-cause mortality compared with those in the top 2%. So if your VO2 max is 60, walking three miles per hour is no problem for you. If your VO2 max is 20, that's going to feel pretty difficult. The higher your VO2 max goes, the more it seems to preserve...
22:52 Right, exactly. It means that your body is adapted to stressful situations. And to adapt your body to these situations, you need to age your body. If you do it long enough, then for sure by decades. It's the only way to do it. You can live naturally, meaning comfortably, and then you will be healthy and live a long life. Or you can go against your intuition, feel uncomfortable and try to adapt your body to running, maybe even marathons, lifting metal for no reason. It doesn't matter what you do. If it goes against your intuition, it will automatically shorten your lifespan. That's why, as I said, everybody who exercises, all of the people who have a high VO2max look at least 10 years older than they are. The guy with the highest VO2max on earth looks, around 20 to 30 years older than he is. It's absolutely insane.
23:51 All of these people are actually insane because they go against their nature, which automatically makes you insane.
[video] 24:00 I aim for 75 minutes of high-intensity cardio each week, yes?
24:04 Yes, and that's why you look so old and sick.
[video] 24:07 That's a lot, but remember, start where you can and build over time. When training in zone 4 and zone 5, your heart rate should reach about 80-90% of its maximum.
24:21 Why? Why would you stress and stretch out your heart to experience a heart attack or heart failure? Why? Why not have a healthy heart?
[video] 24:35 Stack number will vary from person to person, but simple online calculators can help you find your personal training zones. Exercises might include sprinting, cycling, battle ropes. One of my personal favorites, the Norwegian 4x4. The Norwegian 4x4 interval training protocol. Norwegian 4x4 is gold standard at the moment for improving VO2.
24:57 This guy is also very sick. He had made a video about how he cannot get out of bed
[video] 25:04 None of these people are healthy. The Norwegian 4x4 interval training is one of the most effective ways to boost endurance, heart health and VO2 max. This is four minutes.
25:19 Yes, you can boost your endurance, as I said, but it's a completely religious belief that it will improve your heart health. That is based on nothing. And scientifically, as I said, we can easily do experiments and prove that it's bad for our heart just by simply feeling our heartbeat.
[video] 25:42 Of high intensity, zone five exercise.
[video] 25:47 The videos are so well edited, even the music is actually pretty good right now, but the information is just so bad.
26:06 His videos could be so good. Imagine if Brian would actually help people, make them healthy, teach them how to live to over 150 by living naturally, eating natural food, listening to your body, not going against your body. But now he does the opposite. He's making everybody sick and he's actually killing people.
[video] 26:31 As with all things Blueprint, measurement and data is everything. So for optimal results, Wear a good heart rate monitoring device to ensure you're working within the correct zones.
[video] 26:42 Pillar four, mobility and flexibility. What is mobility? The most important aspect of a functional human being. Mobility is one of the keys to longevity and training. Most people are lacking sufficient mobility in key areas. Here's the false narrative. Stretching is optional. Stretching is a waste of time. Stretching's popularity is mostly undeserved. Stretching is a big waste of time. The truth is, mobility determines how long your body stays functional. As we age, joints stiffen. Connective tissue tightens.
27:11 All of that will only happen if you eat seed slime, vegetables, all kinds of unnatural foods which are not designed for your body. As long as you eat natural foods, you won't experience that. Show me one human being that eats natural food and experienced any of this. You won't be able to find one.
[video] 27:37 and simple movements become more difficult. Falls are one of the leading causes of injury and death in older adults. Mobility training protects your ability to move freely. Being able to move freely will allow you to maximize your progress in anything you do.
27:53 To be fair, stretching isn't really stressful unless you really overdo it. I wouldn't say that it's bad or good. To me, it's kind of neutral.
[video] 28:04 Aspects of mobility and flexibility to create a good, well-rounded, flexible body. A simple guide. Incorporate stretching and mobility work daily. Focus on the hips, spine, ankles, hamstrings, shoulders. It doesn't have to be complicated. Five to ten minutes a day can make a profound difference.
28:24 No animal does this. And some guys or girls also, actually, it's probably more so girls that do this, really overdo it also. As I said, if that's the case, then it's bad for you, obviously. But when you look at humans in nature, so to speak, and any other animals, They just don't do it. They stretch when they wake up or also during the day, but they do normal, natural stretching. They follow their intuition, which is what you should always do. But this goes against your intuition for the most part.
[video] 29:07 It means that you're sick if you're not able to do that. That's why you could draw some kind of...
29:27 Correlation.
[video] 29:28 Percent higher all-cause mortality risk among middle-aged adults. Balance reflects coordination, neuromuscular control, and brain health. If your body doesn't know how to switch your core on and make your muscles work in the right order, you will fall over a lot. A simple guide. Practice balance exercises daily. Stability drills.
29:50 You don't need to do any of that. You should simply be able to naturally keep your balance. That's it. He just doesn't understand anything. He believes that you need to go against your intuition and exercise, do specific movements. There's no need for any of this. No animal does this.
[video] 30:16 and my personal favorite, single leg stands. Try doing them with your eyes closed for as long as possible. And remember, small efforts today create stability decades from now. Friends, you don't need the perfect workout routine. You just need to start. Choose one pillar and begin integrating it into your daily routine. in my personal protocol i train for six to eight hours per week each day i do 30 minutes of strength training 30 minutes of cardio with mobility flexibility and balance work that is horrible that's way too much stress that explains the dark eye circles they are only caused by stress nothing else layered in throughout the day The most important principle isn't perfection or intensity, it's consistency. Exercise should become a habit. Because movement isn't just about looking younger, it's about building a body to carry you forward.
31:12 But it doesn't make you look younger if you mean exercise. Movement is natural, normal. Every animal moves, as far as I know.
[video] 31:22 ...for decades to come. Peace out, immortals.
[video] 31:30 So we all matter. Correct. Even that guy? Especially so. We all want to be hot and jacked. That's a great benefit of exercise, but that's not the end goal. The goal is to build a body that carries you forward, staying strong, resilient, and injury-free, becoming the best version of yourself now at 60, 80, and 100.
[video] 32:02 He's gonna be fine. He'll also be back.
32:19 Some years ago, Brian Johnson said that he doesn't listen to his body, his intuition, and instead he trusts the data, the symbols which you interpret. And then you imagine that what you're reading is the so-called truth, which doesn't even make any sense because the truth can only be something that you sense, know. Otherwise, it's a belief, meaning that Brian Johnson bases his life on beliefs, ideas that other humans thought of instead of his own body, and that will be his downfall. You can only be healthy, happy, and live a long life if you listen to your body, meaning your nature. Once you go against your nature, which is what this video was promoting, you will suffer.
33:20 You will feel pain. Maybe you will get injured. Whatever the case, you will slowly... deteriorate, which is exactly what you should expect if you run a lot, lift weights, or do anything that goes against your intuition. Seeing as scientifically, and as I said, you can do experiments yourself, we know that exercise is very unhealthy. But a lot of people nowadays ignore science and instead focus on beliefs.
33:55 religious beliefs for the most part. And as you can see, none of them are doing good. All of them look miserable. They look old for their chronological age, seeing as the only age biologically. Some of them, such as Rhonda Patrick, hide their age for obvious reasons. If you're proud of what you do and promote, why don't you tell us how old you are? Why doesn't everybody do that? It's because a lot of these people sell their courses, supplements, some kind of powders, energy drinks. It's a business for them. The last thing that they are thinking about is your health or longevity. Thanks for watching.
