0:00 Yo guys, I'm going to review part of a documentary which is called USA's Obesity Epidemic.
[video] 0:07 Phoenix, Arizona. Population 1.6 million. Here, one in three adults is obese.
0:15 I've been to Phoenix, I didn't notice anything.
[video] 0:18 In the middle of the Arizona desert, between cacti and mountains, a new type of bootcamp sprang up in Scottsdale last year. A four star academy that looks like a mansion. It's strictly for teenage girls ages 13 to 18. Their stay here is set for a four month minimum and it will leave them $31,000 out of pocket.
0:35 31,000 for four months to lose weight? Wow. It's a good business.
[video] 0:41 Walk about 1.5 and then walk back. Every morning, seven days a week. We did the math, and it's 21 miles a week. So it's a nice time to wake up and see the sunrise.
0:52 There's already a lot wrong with this, seeing as you don't have to walk or do anything specifically to lose weight, seeing as diet is the number one reason why you gain weight. We'll see what they will eat, hopefully, but it's already a sign that what they are doing at this bootcamp must be wrong, seeing as they, on top of eating a proper diet, have to walk 21 miles a week, as she said.
[video] 1:20 It's definitely made me feel more productive, for sure. Okay, yeah. Worse than I imagined. We'll see what else is about to come.
1:34 Can I have finals?
1:51 I guess they're counting the calories there. From what I could see so far, it was some kind of cornflakes, which are just fiber and sugar. Carbohydrates are sugar. I don't know if they teach them that they're probably not. They should understand that when you eat carbohydrates, you're eating sugar, which means that your insulin is going to spike. Your insulin is going to signal your body to grow, which also means to gain fat. The more insulin you produce, the fatter you're going to get essentially, especially if you eat carbohydrates together with fat. Protein also provokes production of insulin, but not as much as carbohydrates. It's not even comparable.
[video] 2:25 We write down our food and the calories, protein, carbs, and fat for everything that we eat, and we write it after we eat it to keep track of it. We do it for every meal, and then we just add it all up and write the totals for every meal.
2:42 counting calories and forcing yourself to walk which burns calories could theoretically cause you to lose weight seeing as if you don't consume enough energy and then you even consume energy on top of that you will consume yourself except that there is a way easier way to do this simply stop eating carbohydrates stop producing so much insulin eat a meat based diet only animal foods Even dairy could work in this case. Dairy, eggs, meat. Ideally, of course, mostly only meat. And you will then also not need to do any of the extra steps. You wouldn't have to exercise at all. You would overall feel a lot better. You would feel happier, satiated. You wouldn't have these crazy cravings.
[video] 3:28 The staff nutritionist calculates the calories in each meal.
3:36 That's the problem, they calculate the calories, which are the macronutrients, carbs, fat and protein. What they should be doing is also calculating the micronutrients, which they are not getting from the garbage that they are eating. They ate the cornflakes with some kind of milk. I'm gonna assume that it was skim milk, which doesn't have any nutrients anyway. Even pasteurized whole-fat milk doesn't have anything because of pasteurization. destroys everything and that was for sure not raw milk and Bananas which have some potassium some electrolytes, but really nutritionally again nothing when it comes to micronutrients Which means that the body is gonna be craving micronutrients all day long and these girls who are overweight really just crave just like any human being micronutrients once you have all of the micronutrients that you need you don't have these crazy food cravings. When you eat this kind of garbage, you're gonna crave food all of the time. If you would be eating a lot of even muscle meat, but ideally, of course, organs, liver, heart,
4:36 brain you would want to eat way less food overall plus you would lose the extra excess weight that you have it would be so much easier instead they have to force themselves to try to eat this then to walk these extra steps and probably also exercise on top of that just to somehow lose the weight it's really horrible i could make people lose weight so easily and they would be happy while doing it And these people make so much money from such garbage. It's crazy. They have rich parents, I assume.
[video] 5:08 It's kind of a peanut butter substitute. It has a little bit less calories. The school has created a scale of how full a person feels after a meal with the aim of curbing appetite. I'm at a five. So I'll probably have another piece of fruit and be at a six.
5:28 Peanut butter doesn't have the kind of fat which our bodies are made of, but still, some of it is going to be stored together with the banana, seeing as you're consuming mostly plant oils, not actual fat, with carbohydrates, as I said, which you still shouldn't combine, even though it's not actual animal fat, and this will lead to some weight gain. This is exactly what you should not be doing. You should not be eating small portions and counting calories when you're eating oils or fats together with carbohydrates. You shouldn't be doing that at all.
[video] 6:07 We usually shoot for a six at meals. It pretty much means like pretty good to go, but still slightly hungry. So I want to shoot for a six, so I probably have another orange. They're learning to live with feeling hungry. Kaylee is 18.
6:25 That is so dumb. Seriously. That's basically like torture.
[video] 6:29 She's from Texas. She entered the academy weighing 240 pounds. She has now lost almost 45 pounds.
6:36 okay she has lost 45 pounds congratulations is that sustainable is it sustainable to eat this way and to always feel hungry not eating enough no of course not they will go back home and gain weight again this is a terrible boot camp because what they're promoting is a torture and weight loss within the boot camp but weight gain when you're outside again which means that you will come back and spend more money
[video] 7:13 Kali owes the weight loss to Lindsay. She teaches the students healthy eating habits. Today, Lindsay's nutrition class is highlighting the danger of eating salt rich food. High sodium content can lead to problems with blood pressure and water retention.
7:24 Salt and sodium are not the same thing, but I wouldn't expect them to teach that they're
[video] 7:29 Meat has around 50 milligrams of sodium per 100 grams.
7:48 Let's say that if you're a man, you would be eating around a kilogram of meat a day, then you would be consuming 500 milligrams of sodium a day. That's more or less the natural amount, not 2,300.
[video] 8:00 The things you usually eat at home, out, fast food, at restaurants, and we're going to bring up that nutrition content that we've looked at before and take a look at the sodium in some of our favorite... Well, I did Chick-fil-A, and my favorite one was the highest one. It's always higher than you think it's going to be with things. Like, the calories, it's 450. Like, the carbs are a little too high compared to what I usually eat here, and so is the fat. And the sodium's also pretty high. My favorite meal is the chicken teriyaki bowl. And I checked the sodium, and it was so high. I think a lot of it's just not knowing, like, what's in the food and what... like like calorie intake and stuff and just not being aware of what you're eating so I think awareness is like a huge I feel sorry for these girls part of what we're doing so why do you think we like sodium so much it enhances flavors Besides their nutrition classes, Kaylee and her friends keep up with their regular classes online five hours per day. I finished everything and went back. Was there anything yesterday? I checked. And where's your speech? Yeah, that as well. You got that here?
[video] 8:59 I was going to read through it and take some notes. Yeah, definitely do that. 3.30 p.m. Once the school day is over, it's time for cooking lessons. Twice a week, the girls learn how to prepare a balanced meal that they will easily be able to recreate back home. Oh, I burned my finger a little bit.
[video] 9:15 Today's menu includes a cauliflower-based hummus, but the classes are varied, with the aim of introducing the girls to new ingredients.
9:25 You don't really see them eating any animal foods, from what I can tell. The milk, which as I said was probably skim milk, I assume. And then now hummus with cauliflower? That's already a huge problem, because you're telling them to eat mostly plants, which are mostly carbohydrates, as in sugar.
[video] 9:48 My mom doesn't really cook at home. We've had berry once in a while, and usually it's pasta because it's quick, but this, it's fun cooking. I never really thought about cooking until I came here, but now I do it every other day. A lot of fun school, and it was not, I would sometimes come home feeling very, like, sick, and I don't like that feeling. Can I have some salt, please? I'm going to just put it in for a little bit longer so it gets a little softer.
10:16 Also, what they were eating, cauliflower, is just fiber, essentially. It has no micro or even macro nutrients. Very little, which means that it's a filler food. They're supposed to eat the fiber and feel as if they ate something, even though, nutritionally, they ate nothing, which is bad, because this kind of stuff leads to eating disorders.
[video] 10:39 But it doesn't stop there. To spur weight loss, the girls have one hour of mandatory physical training every day.
10:47 Yes, you're under eating and then you exercise on top of that, which is why you consume your own body fat. Like I said, theoretically, this works while you're in the boot camp, but not long term. Long term, the only way it's gonna work is if you eat at least somewhat naturally. I don't expect them to eat raw meat, obviously, but eat the so-called carnivore diet. Not even. Eat some fruit or whatever you want to, but eat at least animal-based.
[video] 11:14 And where should you feel your squat?
[video] 11:17 This afternoon, a full hour high energy workout set to music. What you refer to as a fat camp or a weight loss camp are completely different. We are just here to exercise, exercise, eat vegetables, exercise. The girls are doing so much more.
11:36 Exercise, exercise, eat vegetables, exercise. Yes, if you do that... You're not giving your body any actual nutrients which sustain your body, seeing as vegetables have nothing. It's more or less the unhealthiest food you could possibly eat. Food group, besides seeds. And then of course you will consume yourself. Yeah, but it's very unhealthy to do this. It's starvation. It's very torturous for the body itself.
[video] 12:03 Just this. This is just one component. We try to do all sorts of fitness. HIIT training, Zumba, sports. So what we'll do is we're gonna hold it upside down and put it on the sternum.
[video] 12:17 It's a lot easier than when I first got here. I've noticed a lot of muscle in. The goal is to give them the physical tools needed in order to lose weight, stay in good health, and appreciate their bodies. I don't know. I'm really enjoying myself right now. I love working out. I feel it makes me...
12:37 That so far isn't even really a workout. She's hardly doing anything, which is why she's able to smile a little bit, unlike the others.
[video] 12:44 I feel good. I feel accomplished. In their quest to lose weight, these girls have left family and friends behind, taking time out of their lives in order to slim down and no longer be defined solely by their weights.
13:01 I understand what these teachers learn when they take nutritional classes nowadays. They are simply ignorant. I also understand why they promote exercise. This is not sustainable for these girls long term. They are not going to succeed by eating cauliflower, which doesn't have any actual macro or micronutrients, as I said. And that's because it's not going to satiate their bodies. They are always going to feel empty. And you may be able to do this for a few months or a few years even, but they are still going to end up being obese. And that's why a large number of Americans is obese. they eat all of this junk food, which is empty of micronutrients, which is why you always have these vitamin and mineral cravings. And you have the mineral cravings also because of all of the anti-nutrients in these foods, which they also consume.
14:01 You consume the corn flakes, which is full of anti-nutrients such as phyrates, and then you consume the minerals, the very few found in bananas, but you don't get any of them because you're eating the banana with the cornflakes. This is the kind of stuff that you should be teaching these girls, but as I said, they don't learn this in these nutritional classes. They just learn to focus on macronutrients, the calories, to under consume them and then to exercise on top of that which as i said works short term then they get back home they of course can't sustain this man-made diet and then they relapse thanks for watching
